As a THIMUN affiliated conference, IMUN follows the same formatting for resolutions. Please use this guide when preparing.

IMUN Position Paper Guide

I. Issue Background

Purpose: To demonstrate your understanding of the topic—its scope, global impact, causes, and challenges.

What to Include:

• A brief explanation of the issue
• Its relevance on the international stage
• Key challenges or statistics
• Existing international efforts or UN involvement

Tips:

• Be objective and concise
• Avoid country-specific opinions here
• Use data and UN sources where possible (cite your sources)

II. Country Position

Purpose: To clearly explain your assigned country's stance, relevant policies, and proposed solutions.

What to Include:

1. Your country's perspective on the issue
2. Domestic impacts and policies
3. Previous international actions (treaties, alliances, UN voting record)
4. Proposed solutions aligned with your country’s interests and capabilities

Tips:

• Stay in character: Represent your country's views, not your own
• Keep proposals practical and actionable

IMUN has made the commitment to reduce its carbon footprint by taking steps to become increasingly paperless. Resolutions are co-submitted during lobby time on the first afternoon of the conference. Once these resolutions have been through the Approval Panel, the chairs will select which ones will be debated. Access resolutions using this link. 

 IMUN hosts a chairing workshop from which one delegate per committee is selected to chair part of a session at the discretion of the committee president. 

To be selected, the student must:

• be an IMUN delegate
• attend the chairing workshop held at the Carlucci American International School of Lisbon, 08:30 to 11:30 on Thursday, the first morning of the conference, prior to the 13:00 opening. 

Applicants will be tested on their:

• vocal control of the room
• understanding of global issues
• knowledge of parliamentary procedure 
• constructive participation in the workshop

To apply for this opportunity, students need to submit a letter of recommendation from their MUN Director, as well as a letter of motivation. These must be emailed to imun@caislisbon.org by September 16.

Further steps will be shared with those whose applications are successful. Spaces are limited.

The Iberian Model United Nations runs a daily student Blog (see "Past Conference") for examples. The role of the press is to engage delegates in interviews, report on events of the conference, as well as to make delegates from around the world welcome in Portugal. Students who show an interest in journalism, especially political journalism, should definitely consider this position as a chance to further their interest and to give a more international view to the IMUN conference.

If you are interested in applying for one of the press positions this must be clearly indicated on Form II and you need to submit a one-page letter of application indicating past experience (if any) and why you think you will be a positive contribution to the press staff to imunpress@caislisbon.org by September 16. 

The final decision will be made by the Secretary General and the Editor in Chief.

Note-passing is entertained at IMUN, at the discretion of the Chair. 

At the 2025 Conference, with the goal of further reducing our carbon footprint, we will expand the electronic note-passing which was piloted in ECOSOC in 2024. 

Paper notes must be:

• written on official stationery (with the delegation's name clearly visible)
• appropriate and related to the debate.

Notes will be checked by Admin staff. Notes which do not meet the above criteria will not be passed.
