Interview with the HRC Delegate of France

During the 2023 IMUN conference, within the Human Rights Committee (HRC), the delegation of France submitted a resolution addressing the agenda issue of the “question of same-sex couples’ rights to marriage and adoption”. The resolution acknowledges the principles outlined in Article 16 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and emphasizes the importance of respecting cultural and religious diversity among Member States. It also recognizes recent positive developments, such as the legalization of same-sex marriage in certain countries. The delegate of France was interviewed to assess her objective of the resolution submitted.

In the interview, the delegate of France informed us that after she presented her main submitter speech, she received 15 Points of Information (POI). The discourse surrounding the resolution was key for reaching any consensus between Member States holding distinct religious beliefs, hence opposing views on the rights of same-sex couples. According to the delegate, extensive clarification from the points of information was imperative in accommodating the interests of all Member States, while simultaneously ensuring the safety and human rights of LGBTQ+ individuals.

The resolution affirms the significance of upholding fundamental freedoms and human rights for all individuals, regardless of their gender identity or sexual orientation. France’s objective was calling for measures to combat discrimination and violence based on gender identity and sexual orientation, promoting a safe environment for same-sex couples and their families. This resolution passed with no changes, as all amendments had ended up failing, with a narrow margin of 32 votes in favor and 31 votes in opposition.
