Interview with the Secretary General

Bachir R., the Secretary General of the 29th IMUN conference, was interviewed by the press team to discuss his responsibilities in the conference and articulate his vision of IMUN. The Secretary General shed light on his role and shared his aspirations for the conference, offering his perspective on the objectives and direction he envisions for the Iberian Model United Nations and its future.

 

Can you explain the roles and responsibilities of the secretary general and how they support the operations of the conference?

The Secretary-General assumes a comprehensive leadership role, overseeing all aspects of conference preparation. This encompasses agenda management, team selection, committee mobilization, and issue identification. Continuous communication with directors, supervision of administration, press, and chair training is imperative. Facilitating delegate training is another crucial aspect. Ultimately, the Secretary-General ensures a holistic overview of all conference areas, striving for an enjoyable and productive event.

 

As the leader of this conference, what key values or principles do you prioritize to ensure the event's integrity?

Collaboration is paramount, aligning with our established goals of promoting diplomacy, respect, and achievement through moderated debate. The emphasis is on fostering international awareness and providing a platform for consensus. The objective is to model the desired world order within the United Nations.

 

In your opinion, what is the role of Model United Nations in educating and empowering the next generation of global citizens, and how is this reflected in the conference's objectives?

Model United Nations serves as a direct avenue for hands-on collaboration, debate, and resolution building. The conference instills essential skills such as lobbying, clause merging, and team building. It effectively contributes to school education and raises awareness of global issues, aligning with the conference's overarching objectives.

 

What features or changes have you introduced to this year's conference that you believe will set it apart from previous editions of IMUN conferences throughout the years? 

This year, we've introduced two new committees: the Human Rights Commission and the Environmental Commission, replacing the Special Conference. Additionally, innovations in our resolution management system and a move towards a paperless policy underscore our commitment to improvement. Collaborative efforts with the International School of Stavanger (Norway), sharing the Historical Security Council, exemplify our dedication to fostering connections.

 

Can you provide insights into the behind-the-scenes work and coordination that goes into making an MUN conference successful, especially considering the diversity of the conference?

The conference's success hinges on meticulous behind-the-scenes work. Tasks range from organizing placards and printing badges to handling delegate changes efficiently. Coordinating opening speeches, designing merchandise, researching reports, training delegates and chairs, updating the website, and maintaining constant communication with schools are crucial components of the preparatory process.

 

What is the most significant lesson you've learned from your experience as Secretary-General of IMUN?

Trust the process. Managing stress and relinquishing some controls are vital lessons. While I tend to be detail-oriented, trusting the capable team I assembled has been pivotal. Establishing trust in the team allows for more effective and streamlined conference organization.

 

How do you envision the future of IMUN conferences, and what changes or developments do you anticipate in the coming years? 

I anticipating the continuation and extension of the paperless policy in the few processes that still require paper. As well as expanding the conference by adding new committees and venues is on the horizon, aiming to enhance the debate quality and maintain the conference's high standards.

 

What is your advice for the future IMUN secretary generals to come?

Select a reliable team and ensure they are well-equipped from the outset. The appointment of a competent Head of Admin is particularly crucial. Without Joana, this year´s Head of Admin, this conference wouldn't be possible. Trust the process and avoid excessive stress, acknowledging that a dependable team alleviates the need for micromanagement.
