The Reduction of Human Trafficking

Around 600,000 to 800,000 men, women, and children are trafficked each year according to the National Criminal Justice Reference Service (NCJRS). Victims of such an act tend to suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety, depression, and other disorders. Immigrant children are particularly vulnerable to human trafficking, with 75-80% of newly arrived unaccompanied children becoming victims of human trafficking in the United States by smugglers who sell them into forced labor or prostitution (Atlantis et al.). An interview was conducted with the delegate of the US about the issue and what the US government is doing to address this problem.

The delegate of the US stated that they have passed multiple laws and are planning on working with other organizations from different countries to combat this issue. Additionally, the delegate stated that “It is our most important goal and is one of our advocacies to combat human trafficking and uphold the human rights of the people”. The delegate was asked to elaborate on how the US can help other member states with human trafficking, responding that one of their most important goals is to defend the rights of all citizens.

The delegate later expressed that “regardless of the profits that criminals are making, our role is to uphold the rights which the UN declaration has presented to us”. Moreover, the delegate of the US was asked about its regulations on human trafficking. The delegate replied, “The United States is imposing more regulations to ensure that immigrants are not punished. However, it is up to a court and judge to deal with the consequences rather than the US government directly”. 

Morocco’s Proposed Solutions

A separate interview was conducted with the delegate of Morocco regarding human trafficking. When asked about which new policies and strategies the delegate planned on creating to help eliminate the issue at hand, the delegate responded that this would be accomplished by increasing security and protection for the victims and implementing stricter legislation. The delegate also stated they would enforce such laws by “increasing the imprisonment length of traffickers.” 

Lastly, the final question of whether countries with the highest amount of human trafficking would receive extra security and precautions to eliminate the issue in their country. "We cannot control countries like the US and China but we can provide more services and finance for them.”
